Liwayway’s Journey From Manual Labeling To Proactive Printing

About Liwayway

Established in 1964 in the Philippines, Liwayway began as a trading company before evolving into a leading food manufacturer under the well-known Oishi brand. In 1997, Liwayway Vietnam was founded as one of the country’s first foreign-invested enterprises, now operating three manufacturing plants in Ho Chi Minh City and Bac Ninh.

Challenge

One of Liwayway’s factories, specializing in heat-processed food products for both domestic and export markets, had long relied on offset printing for product labels.

Variable information such as:

• Lot numbers,
• QC staff,
• Production or expiration dates were filled in manually,

And resulting in:

• Human errors and inconsistent data quality
• Low operational efficiency
• Increasing difficulty maintaining “limited contact” operations during pandemic lockdowns

The transition to thermal label printing initially improved flexibility and accuracy.

However, within three months, a new problem emerged — printed information began to fade, becoming unreadable to both the human eye and barcode scanners.

Results

After internal testing and implementation, Ricoh’s solution successfully met Liwayway’s labeling requirements.Labels printed with the 135PSS–2W2–ST2 material demonstrated excellent performance, with image retention exceeding expectations for products distributed in Vietnam as well as exported to countries such as the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia.

With the success of this pilot model, Liwayway plans to expand the proactive label printing solution to additional production lines and factories in the near future.
