Choosing the Right Thermal Transfer Ribbon: A Practical Guide
- A thermal transfer ribbon is a thin plastic film (typically made of PE) with one side coated in ink. It is a consumable specifically designed for use in thermal transfer printing technology.
- When loaded into a thermal printer, the printhead generates heat, which transfers the ink from the ribbon onto the surface of the label, forming the desired image.
- Thermal transfer ribbons are commonly used to print product information or variable data on labels, such as manufacturing dates, serial numbers, or barcodes.
- Note: This is different from direct thermal labels, which have a heat-sensitive coating that produces images upon contact with the heated printhead—without the need for a ribbon.
Thermal transfer ribbons can be classified according to the following criteria:
- By composition: Wax, Wax-Resin, and Resin
- By ink side: Ink side in, ink side out
- By printhead compatibility: Ribbons for near-edge printheads, ribbons for flat-head printheads
- By product line: Economical, Multi-purpose, High Durable, Extreme Durable, Specialty
Most thermal transfer ribbons on the market are composed of four layers:
- Topcoat layer: Protects the ink during storage and enhances ink adhesion to the label surface.
- Ink layer:Forms the image when in contact with the heated printhead. This layer determines key properties such as heat resistance, scratch resistance, and chemical durability.
- Release layer:Facilitates the smooth separation of the ink layer from the base film during printing.
- Base film:Serves as the foundation for coating the ink and other layers, and plays a crucial role in transferring heat from the printhead.
- In Ricoh ribbons, an additional backcoat layer is applied:This backcoating protects the base film and the printhead, while also helping to reduce static electricity buildup during printing.
Thermal transfer ribbons come in two types: Ink Side Out (FO) and Ink Side In (FI), depending on whether the ink is coated on the outside or inside surface of the ribbon roll.
How to check the ink orientation:
- Stick a piece of adhesive tape on the outside surface of the roll.→ If ink comes off on the tape, it is Ink Side Out (FO).
- If no ink comes off, try the inside surface.→ If ink transfers, it is Ink Side In (FI).
- You can also verify the ink orientation by checking the specifications printed on the ribbon core or the product packaging (for Ricoh ribbons).
- Flat-head printheads are the most commonly used technology on the market. The printhead lies flat, in direct contact with both the ribbon and the label surface. This type is widely compatible with most thermal transfer ribbons and supports printing speeds of up to 10 inches per second (ips).
- Near-edge printheads, on the other hand, are designed with a 45-degree angle between the printhead and the media. This angled design allows the ink to transfer instantly upon brief contact, enabling much higher printing speeds—up to 40 ips. However, near-edge printers require specialized ribbons formulated specifically for this technology.
- Print quality:Sharpness, darkness, and consistency of printed lines, characters, and images.
- Durability and resistance:Scratch resistance, Water and humidity resistance, Chemical resistance, Heat and UV (light) resistance
- Compatibility:The ribbon’s ability to perform well with specific label materials, printers (printhead types), and application environments.
- Compliance with safety standards:Certification and conformity with standards such as RoHS, REACH, UL, and MSDS.
- Material consistency:Stable print performance across different print runs and ribbon batches.
- Supplier reliability and support:The supplier’s reputation, product traceability, and ability to provide technical support when needed.
Depending on the industry and the end-use of printed labels, thermal transfer ribbons may be required to comply with different regulatory standards and certifications.
